Today marks the third annual Mindful Eating Day, hosted by The Center for Mindful Eating (TCME).

Mindfulness and mindful eating are definitely on trend. Innova Market Insights named “mindful choices” the #1 trend driving the food and drink industry in 2018. Though it’s great that these concepts are getting more attention, there seem to be a lot of misinterpretations floating around, including the definition by Innova. I even deleted my Mindful Eating Day blog posts from the past two years because of the misinformation I shared! 🙈

TCME put together a short document covering what mindful eating is and isn’t (scroll to page 2), but I don’t think it quite covers some of the confusion that I see.

As I said last yearwhen the last sugar plums get put away, the diet industry comes out to play.

“Before and after” pictures flood our TV screens and newsfeeds, while gyms overflow with new members. Once again, we promise ourselves that this is the year that we will finally “cut out sugar” or “lose weight”. Even people that we would least suspect are jumping on the Whole30 bandwagon, or trying the latest activated charcoal juice/bone broth cleanse. What is a “Proper” Portion?

One of the most common concerns that my clients say that they struggle with is “portion control”. This exchange that I had with a client made sound familiar to you:

“It’s really hard. I portion out the food and it doesn’t look like enough, so then I take more. Sometimes, it still doesn’t look like enough, so then I take even more,” she said.
“Well, did you try to see if it was enough food?” I asked.
“I have a scale, and sometimes I weigh the food, but still it doesn’t look like enough.”

What I meant when I asked her whether she had “tried” to see if it was a proper portion, was whether or not she actually ate it. My client seemed to be only relying on external cues—her eyes and the scale—to try to determine whether she had served herself enough food.
