Instant Pot Split Pea Soup with Ham Bone {with Stove Top Variation}
 
On the rare occasion that we have bone-in ham in our house, I'll often throw the ham bone in the freezer to make this easy, hearty soup. Extra-delicious with crusty bread.
Recipe type: Soup
Makes: 6-8 servings
Ingredients
  • 3 Tbsp (45 mL) butter
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ham bone or 6 oz (170 g) diced ham
  • 1 lb (454 g) dried green or yellow split peas, sorted
  • 6 cups (1.5 L) chicken broth or water
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Extra diced ham (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
  1. Set Instant Pot to "Saute" setting. Melt butter in Instant Pot. Add onions, celery and carrots and cook, stirring, until onions are softened and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic (and diced ham, if using), and cook, stirring for 30-60 seconds.
  2. Add ham bone, split peas, chicken broth or water and bay leaves. Close the lid, ensuring that the vent is closed.
  3. Push "Manual" and set the Instant Pot to cook on high pressure for 20 minutes.
  4. Once the cooking cycle is done, release the pressure by setting the vent to "Venting". Open the lid and remove ham bone and bay leaves. Remove any leftover meat from ham bone and stir into the soup along with additional leftover diced ham (if using). Season with salt and pepper, to taste.
Notes
Stove-top variation: Melt butter in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add onion, celery and carrots, and cook, stirring, until onions are softened and translucent; about 5 minutes. Add garlic and diced ham (if using) and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30-60 seconds.
Add ham bone, split peas, chicken broth or water and bay leaves. Bring to a boil and lower heat. Simmer, covered, until split peas are cooked, about 1 hour.
Remove ham bone and bay leaves. Remove any leftover meat from ham bone and stir into the soup along with additional leftover diced ham (if using). Season with salt and pepper, to taste.
