Puffed Wheat Squares


Rumoured to be invented in Red Deer, this chocolatey treat is a Prairie classic. And (in my opinion) knocks the socks off a rice crispy square any day!

Recipe type: Dessert, Snack

Makes: 16-20

Ingredients

  • ½ cup (125 mL) sugar

  • ½ cup (125 mL) corn syrup

  • ¼ cup (60 mL) butter

  • 2 Tbsp (30 mL) cocoa

  • 2 Tbsp (30 mL) brown sugar (optional)

  • 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla

  • 5 cups (1.25 L) puffed wheat

Instructions

  1. Grease an 8 x 8" baking dish and set aside.

  2. In a large pot or saucepan, heat sugar, corn syrup, butter, cocoa and brown sugar (if using) over medium heat until it comes to a boil. Allow to boil for 1-2 minutes (but not more, or else the squares will be tough)

  3. Remove from heat and add in vanilla and puffed wheat. Stir to coat.

  4. Press mixture into prepared baking dish and allow to cool to room temperature. Cut into 16-20 squares.
