Make Peace with Emotional Eating

A 5-Week Virtual Course

This course will NOT help you stop eating emotionally.

Before you click away, hear me out:

I know emotional eating makes you feel out of control, guilty, and ashamed.

I know that you eat so well during the day, and that emotional eating feels like your little unhealthy secret.

I know that you’ve tried “closing the kitchen” after 7, not letting certain foods in the house, going for walks, taking baths, brushing your teeth early, and nothing’s worked.

What if all this fighting was simply a result of misunderstanding?

We all do things for a reason, and often emotional eating hits a lot of different reasons at once, even when we don’t realize it. This is why it’s not as simple as replacing one habit with another, and why celery doesn’t quite hit the spot when you’re really craving popcorn.

Emotional eating might be meeting the basic need for food, the need for comfort, the need for stimulation, the need for reward, just to name a few.

In this course, we will dive into why we eat emotionally, and more importantly, why you eat emotionally, so that you can be better equipped to recognize and honour your unique needs, even if it’s with food!

Course Outline

  • We kick things off with 3 Surprising Truths About Emotional Eating, then you'll dive deep in exploring your own history and relationship with emotional eating, so that you can tailor the material in the upcoming lessons to your specific needs.

  • Sometimes, what we think is emotional eating is simply unplanned eating, or eating that happens outside of regular mealtimes.

This week's lesson is all about making sure that you're eating enough in all senses of the word. Ensuring that your body and brain are properly fuelled will give you more capacity to manage your emotional needs.

  • Why do we think emotional eating is so bad, anyway? Week 3 takes a critical look at the societal forces that have led us to believe that certain foods and ways of eating are "good" versus "bad," and invites us to explore what it would be like to question these beliefs and values.

  • Although emotional eating is rarely only emotional, it's important to deal with the emotions too. This week's lesson is about understanding your emotional needs and how they show up, as well as expanding your toolbox with more ways to honour those needs.

  • This final week is an opportunity to practice all the skills that you've learned in the course thus far, as well as ask questions and swap strategies with your classmates.

  • Get individualized support with a 30 minute, 1:1 session with registered dietitian Vincci Tsui at any time within 6 months of completing the course. (Available to participants in Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Northwest Territories or the Yukon only)
